If you register on the websites of the three major credit bureaus and check your credit report,
you may notice transactions or entries that you don’t agree with.
In such cases, you can file a dispute directly on their platform, providing a valid reason.
Most disputes are resolved in favor of the consumer—though it can take some time.
The Dispute Process_Credit Report Errors
When you file a dispute with a credit bureau,
they will contact the relevant creditor or institution
—such as a credit card company or, in my case, Nissan–Infiniti
—to verify the accuracy of the information.
However, I recommend contacting the creditor directly
to lodge a complaint and file a dispute on their end as well.
This approach speeds up the process and increases the chances of a favorable resolution.
By doing this,
you create a situation where both the credit bureau and the company
(Nissan–Infiniti in my case) are working simultaneously to verify and address the issue.
1. Contacting Nissan–Infiniti for a Dispute
When I contacted Nissan–Infiniti and explained my case,
they provided the steps for filing a dispute directly with them.
While I found their process frustrating
—especially considering they were the ones responsible for the error that negatively impacted my credit score
—it’s still necessary to follow through.
After all, I’m the one stuck dealing with the issue.
Here’s the process Nissan–Infiniti shared with me for disputing a record:
- Prepare a Dispute Request Letter
Include the following information:- Your name and Infiniti account number
- Specific details about the disputed transaction or record
- An explanation of why you believe the information is incorrect
- Supporting documents to back up your claim
- Send the Request by Mail
(Yes, in the 21st century, they still require disputes to be submitted via regular mail. Unbelievable, right?)- Use Certified Mail to ensure you have proof that your letter was received.
- Use Certified Mail to ensure you have proof that your letter was received.
Tips for Sending Your Dispute Request
To make things easier for others dealing with similar issues, I’ve shared my own dispute letter below for reference
Dispute Letter
Name of the account: Name, Infiniti acct #29009xxxxxSpecific information to be disputed:
Reported as serious delinquencies: To be removed
Delayed payment: There is no delayed payment
The amount was paid as agreed but was less than the full amount: This comments can confuse lenders and misleading information. It sounds like there are unpaid balance.
Explanation of Basis for Dispute:
The vehicle was returned in excellent condition.
The additional fee after I retuned was disputed due to lack of detailed explanation
After negotiation and being informed that the total amount might be adjusted, I waited for a response from Infiniti Nissan. It was not just I did not pay without any reason.
The agreed amount was paid on May 12, 2020, as per their final adjustment.
Despite this, the account was inaccurately reported, negatively impacting my credit score.
I wouldn’t have risked my credit score for a few hundred-dollar discount if it were not for the assurance of an adjustment.
Supporting document/support:
See the Payment history: Last lease payment made in March 25 2020. During the lease, you can see I had never made any late payment
End of lease document

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.
If you’ve been unfairly penalized by a credit error, don’t hesitate to fight back.
Filing disputes with both the credit bureau and the company involved might take some effort,
but it’s worth it to restore your credit and peace of mind. 😊
