Taking the First Step Toward Financial Freedom
When we think of those who claim to have achieved financial freedom, they often appear extraordinary.
Many of them have built or sold businesses, accumulating immense wealth that not only secures their freedom but also allows them to influence others through books, lectures, and other platforms.
However, achieving financial freedom doesn’t always require owning a massive business or amassing vast riches.
I’ve personally known people who, while not wealthy in the conventional sense, have reached a level of financial independence that allows them to live fulfilling and content lives.
The definition of financial freedom varies for everyone,
as does the amount of wealth needed to achieve it.
Defining Financial Freedom in My Terms
To me, financial freedom means:
“Being able to meet my daily financial needs through passive income, without needing to work 8 hours a day.”
At 44 years old, I’ve achieved a certain degree of financial freedom.
My passive income covers the essentials: insurance, property taxes, living expenses, and modest leisure activities.
Despite this, I still work full-time, contribute to my investment accounts monthly, and prioritize saving by avoiding unnecessary expenses. My husband and I cook most of our meals, enjoy occasional treats, and treat ourselves to simple outings at local restaurants.
The Joy of Working Freely
I genuinely enjoy working, meeting people, and building relationships.
While this brings occasional stress, I’ve learned to manage it and find satisfaction and joy in the process.
Ultimately, my goal is to become an “easygoing grasshopper who works happily”
—balancing work with leisure while maintaining financial stability.
How I Started My Journey
Unless you’ve inherited a lucrative property or hit the lottery jackpot, financial freedom as an average employee requires persistent learning, effort, and patience.
Looking back, I regret the time and money I wasted aimlessly.
Yet, through trial and error, I’ve found my way toward financial independence.
Before diving into strategies and tools, I want to highlight the foundational work that was crucial for me
—a preparation phase that minimized risks and maximized my chances of success.
